The primary election is today. Here's what you need to know.
Only 2nd and 3rd Ward residents will head to the polls today. If no candidate gets 50% of the vote share, the top two vote-getters will proceed to an April 4 runoff.
It’s the primary election day in Harvey. But not for everyone.
Here’s what you need to know about the candidates, polling sites, and what to bring.
What’s on the ballot
Not all Harvey residents will head to the polls today. Today, voters will determine the alderman for the city’s for the 2nd and 3rd Ward only.
Harvey has a primary election, typically held in February, but only if there are four or more candidates in a given race.
If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote share, the top two vote-getters proceed to an April general election, also known as a runoff.
The candidates (listed in ballot order)
2nd Ward
Antonia McBride
Albert Abney
Colby Chapman
Yarif Vhora
Angelette Taylor
Melvin M. Bond
3rd Ward
Alderwoman Telanee Smith
Bonnie Rateree
Myra Gardner

What to bring
Identification isn’t required to vote in most cases, but it’s good to have one on hand in case an election judge challenges your right to vote.
Illinois is one of a few states that has same-day registration, for those who aren’t currently registered but would like to. In that case, you’ll need to have two forms of identification, including one that has your residential address.
Eligible voters meet the following criteria:
- U.S. citizenship;
- At least 18 years of age by general election day, OR
- At least 17 years of age by the primary given that person will be 18 by general election day;
- Two forms of ID;
- A resident of that precinct at least 30 days prior to election day.
How to find your polling place
Polls are open between 6am and 7pm. If you’re in line when polls close, stay in line. You can’t be turned away from voting if you’re already in line.
The state has an online tool you can use to find your polling place here.
