The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) began accepting 2021 tax returns January 24, 2022, far earlier than last year’s February 12 start date. Many people’s finances changed as a result of the pandemic. Many nationwide filed for unemployment benefits, meaning that information has to be reported to the IRS this tax season.

The tax form required for unemployment insurance recipients, a 1099-G, is now available. Tax season can be confusing for many, so here’s what you need to know ahead of that crucial April 18 deadline.

Which tax returns do you need to file this with?

The 1099-G, also called Form 1099-G, Certain Government Payments, is required for any individual who received state or federal unemployment benefits.

If you received benefits under pandemic programs that expired, do you still need to file a 1099-G?

Yes. The form is required for both regular unemployment insurance and expired pandemic-relief programs. Those expired programs include:

  • Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA)
  • Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FDUC)
  • Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC)
  • Lost Wages Assistance (LWA)
  • Mixed Earners Unemployment Compensation (MEUC)
  • state extended Employment Benefits

How do you get your copy?

If you opted to receive your form electronically, you should have received an email from Illinois Department of Employment Security notifying you that your copy was available to view in your online account.

If you didn’t opt in for an electronic form, your tax document will come in the mail, so check your mailbox regularly.

All claimants can log into their online account at IDES.illinois.gov or call the Department directly at (312) 338-4337 to receive a paper copy.

If you have questions about your 1099-G, who should you talk to?

Questions about your form can be directed to IDES by calling (800) 244-5641. If you have questions about filing taxes with this form, IDES advises you to contact the IRS by calling (800) 829-1040 or visit IRS.gov.
