Gas provider and nonprofit deliver 250 free coats at Holmes Elementary School

Hundreds of Harvey kids will be ready for the frigid temperatures thanks to the generosity of two groups.
Nicor Gas and Operation Warm, a national nonprofit organization that distributes coats and winter apparel to families in need, distributed free 250 coats—and high-fives—to Holmes Elementary School students.
Principal Gabriela Delgado thanked the volunteers for their generosity and kindness.
“Holmes Elementary School is very grateful for the organization Operation Warm and Nicor Gas for coming out and giving a coat to each of our students,” Delgado said. “The students were excited about receiving their coats and are ready for winter.”
Holmes has previously worked independently with the nonprofit group, which launched in 1998.
Operation Warm and Nicor have given coats to Harvey kids before at Whittier Elementary School students in 2021, according to district spokesperson and community education manager Arletha Bolton. They have delivered more than 2,500 coats across Northern Illinois.
Nicor Gas is dedicated to being active outside of serving as an energy provider, said John Mansfield, Director of Customer and Partner Service in the Department of Energy Efficiency, especially during the pandemic.
The natural gas distribution company, which also launched a new service to help with other household expenses, has ramped up its south suburban outreach, doing food giveaways and farmers markets for those in need.
“With COVID, a lot of customers have really had negative impacts with inflation—there’s a lot of things challenging people, right now,” Mansfield said.
