The pandemic wanes but many are still struggling with jobs, housing, and even food. The Community Economic Development Association in Harvey will be holding a resource fair at the Gloria Taylor Center for those in need. HWH / Amethyst J. Davis

The Community Economic Development Association in Harvey is having a resource fair this Saturday at the Gloria Taylor Center for anyone interested in learning more about their programs.

The fair, which starts at 2:30pm, also includes up to 20 other agencies that assist with early learning, housing, workforce development, youth programs, childcare, healthcare, senior services, and mental health.

“We’re hoping that people find information that is needed and of value to them,” CEDA program manager Machelle Anderson said. CEDA is an anti-poverty organization that’s been active in Harvey for generations.

As the summer approaches, there’s also job opportunities available for young people as young as 14 years old looking to make some cash.

“We plan to direct hire [them as temporary CEDA employees] and place them at the Harvey Library and City Hall doing clerical work.”

Other local organizations like Restoration Ministries and Adults Active have their own youth summer employment programs and will also be present.

And you don’t need to bring any personal documents — just your eagerness to learn about the resources available to you.

Entry is free and masks are strongly recommended but not required.

CEDA will also be enforcing physical distancing.

In 2019, the organization received a $1.5 million boost from the Robin Hood Foundation, allowing them to ramp up anti-poverty efforts in Harvey for the next 3 years.

CEDA is currently in the second year of the implementation phase.

We’re filling the void after the collapse of local newspapers decades ago. But we can’t do it without reader support.
