Cook County issues disaster proclamation following Monday storms
The National Weather Service confirmed that tornadoes touched down in Country Club Hills, Hazel Crest, Orland Park, and Lansing on Monday, July 27.
Cook County has issued a disaster proclamation to pursue available resources to assist in recovery efforts after a pair of storms Monday caused flash flooding, power outages, and saw two tornadoes touchdown in the Southland.
“My administration will continue standing with residents, supporting local recovery efforts and pursuing all available resources to help communities rebuild,” Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said in a statement Thursday.
The National Weather Service confirmed that an E-0 tornado touched down in Orland Park and Hazel Crest. An E-1 tornado touched down Country Club Hills, Glenwood, and Lynwood, with residual damage to parts of Harvey, Markham, Homewood, and Lansing. Tornadoes are measured on the Enhanced Fujita scale of 0 to 5, and higher numbers equate to greater intensity.
In Harvey, power lines that were down caught fire, seen flailing in the area near 154th St. and Wood St., confirmed by the HWH via video. Police and fire personnel responded on the scene.
The Cook County Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security has been working with at least 15 municipalities to assess needs, according to the statement, fielding requests for generators, debris removal, and portable light towers. The Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways has assisted with road clearance.
Residents are urged to complete an impact survey to report damages by August 5. Complete the survey here.
