HSD 152 expands summer school for incoming kindergarten students

For the first time ever, incoming kindergarten students entering Harvey School District 152 will have the opportunity to enroll in summer school, ahead of the upcoming school year. 

The program expansion is funded by a grant from the Illinois State Board of Education. The funding will allow 13 students to start this summer. There are already 138 enrolled students across the first through seventh grades. 

The district is still finalizing summer school enrollment.

Personnel changes 

Next school year, Whittier Elementary School will have a new principal as principal Lisa Manuel submitted her resignation that goes into effect on June 30. Whittier will also welcome a new fourth and fifth grade teacher, who will start for the next school year. A new custodian began May 13.  

There is a vacancy in the first grade teacher at Maya Angelou Elementary School; the resignation went into effect immediately. There will be a new elementary school teacher and social worker at Angelou. Both positions will start next school year. 

Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School elementary welcomes three new staff members: an english language arts teacher and a science teacher who will start next school year; an in-school suspension coordinator started May 13. 

These announcements were made during the personnel committee presentation. Most of the selected candidates learned about the opportunities from the district’s career fair. They plan to host another one in the near future.

Financial matters 

Across the district’s funds, it holds a balance of $41.5 million. The district has received 79.9 percent of anticipated revenue, and expects to receive $6,700,000 by June 30. Revenue is exceeding expenses by $3.9 million. They’ve spent 68 percent of the $33.3 million they planned to spend for the school year, with a remainder of $10.5 million budgeted for expenses for the rest of the school year.
