A spokesperson from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that a deceased person’s body was picked up from 15234 Myrtle Avenue in Harvey just days before Christmas.

That’s the address for the iconic Ascension-St. Susanna Catholic Church, a city-owned property. The cause of death is still pending, and the Office is still working to identify the individual, the spokesperson said.

The Office’s information confirms social media chatter late December 2023 of a possible death at the church. Residents across the street said they spotted an ambulance on the western edge of the campus that “was out there for a good minute,” one woman said. She did not want to be identified for safety reasons.

The HWH has obtained images of the ambulance on the property that day from a resident who lives on the eastern side of the property.

Harvey purchased the campus, once a parish and school, in January 2023 from the Chicago Archdiocese. The city intends to repurpose part of the campus into a civic center for a controversial dual-use water detention pond and park project with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District.

Organizers are launching a petition to stop the effort, resulting in displacement of longtime residents, albeit with challenges.
