A month later than usual, first installment of property tax bills due by April 1

The first installment of property tax bills are usually due in March. However, county leadership pushed state lawmakers for an extension to give taxpayers more breathing room after the second installment of 2024 bills were late.

The Cook County Treasurer’s Office is slated to begin mailing first installment property tax bills to the nearly 1.8 million taxpayers in Cook County in the coming weeks.

Bills will be mailed by March 2 and are due by April 1. That’s a month later than usual: They are typically mailed in February and due in March.

The county “pushed lawmakers for the extension to give property owners some breathing room after second installment bills for 2024 were late,” Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle and Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said in a joint statement Tuesday.

While bills will be mailed next month, online payments can be made as early as February 20 on the county treasurer’s website. First installment funds will be distributed to taxing agencies within 30 days of their receipt, according to the statement.

The second installment of 2024 tax bills were mailed in November 2025 and due in December 2025 due to technological upgrades to the county computer system. That crunch led to some south suburban school districts taking out bonds or relying on general funds to cover regular expenses.

The county offered a short-term interest free loan for taxing districts, totaling $20 million for 20 taxing bodies.

We’re filling the void after the collapse of local newspapers decades ago. But we can’t do it without reader support.
