The Harvey Public Library District’s regular board meeting scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 13 at 6:30 p.m. was suddenly cancelled due to a potential severe weather warning.

A sign posted on the door read, “Due to possible tornado warning. Tonight’s meeting is cancelled!” Another sign on the door said the library was closing at 5 p.m. due to the weather warning.

Two rounds of tornadoes have torn through the south suburbs in less than a month. The latest tornado struck through Homewood, Flossmoor, Glenwood, and nearby communities on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

The National Weather Service predicted torrential rain with a storm moving southeast at between 25 to 35 miles per hour that afternoon into the evening and overnight hours:

The board was to set to discuss a draft of the 2027 budget, according to an agenda that was posted in-person at the library. The agenda was not published on the website but only in-person the vestibule of the entryway; the board has not published agendas on the library’s website since May 2025, in accordance with the Open Meetings Act.
