Hazel Crest distributing 14,000 pounds of food for families impacted by Southland tornadoes
Harvey, Homewood, Markham, and Hazel Crest residents can receive food from the village and faith partners on August 25, and volunteers are needed to prepare.

The village of Hazel Crest will distribute 14,000 pounds of food on August 25 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. to its residents, as well as those from Harvey, Homewood, and Markham following a record-breaking storm season.
“Fourteen thousand pounds of food represents more than a donation — it represents compassion, partnership, and neighbors coming together to remind those affected by the tornado that they are not along,” mayor Sandra Alexander said in a statement.
Food can be picked up at the Village of Hazel Crest Police Department, located at 3000 W. 170th Pl. The Church of Latter-day Saints, Unity Partnership, Sarah Allen’s Missionary Society, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Project, and DuPage AME Church are partners on the endeavor.
Additional donated items like clothing, gift cards, and toiletries will be specifically available for Hazel Crest residents displaced by storms. An E-1 tornado rocked the village twice in less than 20 minutes on July 27.
Volunteers are also needed to prepare for the giveaway. There are two days to help out: August 24 from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. and August 25 from 12:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.
Cook County and Gov. JB Pritzker have each issued a disaster proclamation. It unlocks state aid and allows federal leaders to request disaster aid through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
